Not all halal products may meet standards: Expert
DOHA: Not all halal-certified food products sold in supermarkets in Qatar and other Gulf countries comply with halal standards, according to a Thai professor at a well-known university in Bangkok. Dr Winai Dahlan, Associate Professor and Director of the Halal Science Center (HSC) of Chulalongkorn University, said many studies had shown that food products exported to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries with halal certification may not have been processed scientifically according to the required standards.
Can Bar Codes for Food Lead to Safer Practices?

systems and databases for tracing food origins. From the Locavore

healthy and green" products (also available for mobile devices), and

Animal Welfare Groups call on Federal Agriculture Minister to Stop Slaughter Without Stunning
ANIMAL welfare groups have called on federal Agriculture Minister Tony
Burke to halt the slaughter by throat slitting of up to 4000 sheep a
week at four Victorian abattoirs for new kosher exports, which began
last month. The
previous agriculture minister Peter McGauran announced a review of the
standard for ritual slaughter in August last year after The Age
revealed animals were being slaughtered without stunning for halal meat
exports. The review will examine the
science of how much suffering this causes to conscious animals and
whether the practice is inhumane.
Let's hope that this review is made public.

How Safe is Cloned Meat?
With the US Food and Drug Administration already concluding that cloned meat is safe for consumers and the European food Safety Authority giving their greenlight as well to the consumption of cloned animal products do the public even have any say in the matter? Just like GMO food or farmed fish, will the real results of these 'frankenfood' alternatives ever be known in this decade? To then make a fatwa on whether cloned meat is acceptable would take a lot more than one mufti in Malaysia giving his comment.
