Premium Brands buys Vancouver Halal meat supplier for $2.1 million

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Premium Brands Holdings Corp. (TSX:PBH) says it has acquired Vancouver-based South Seas Meats Ltd., a distributor of Halal specialty meats that will help expand Premium's portfolio of ethnic foods. Premium Brands, which has about 25,000 customers in Western Canada and Washington State, paid about $2.1 million for South Sea Meats, which had annual sales of about $10 million. Ahsan Razak, the founder and operator of South Sea Meats, will join the management team of Premium Brands.

In response to a recent article 'Pringles Now Halal', Halal Focus questioned Procter & Gamble (Malaysia) on: What does this mean with regard to Pringles globally if you buy them without a Halal certification on the packet? Are they also Halal? The following is the official statement from Procter & Gamble (Malaysia). If you want to follow up in your region, I would take their suggestion to contact your regional Procter & Gamble office to tell them you would also like the assurance of a Halal certification on your Pringles. Or does it matter to you? Are you content with reading the ingredients? You are the consumer, you have a say in it.

Malaysia – Procter & Gamble (P&G) has had its potato crisp brand Pringles certified by Malaysia's Halal authority JAKIM. All Pringles labels have started to carry the Halal logo from December 2009.

Interest is growing among companies that want to offer products for the Muslim market because trade in halal products is growing not only in Germany and Europe but worldwide, with Muslims projected to be 30 per cent of the world population by 2025. The largest halal markets are in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Middle East. In Europe, Germany, France and Britain are the largest.
