UK - Halal meat getting recognition at long last

A research project has been commissioned by the newly-formed Halal Steering Group, established by EBLEX with key industry figures to guide work in the Halal sector and act as a forum for issues related to Halal meat. It will cover the Muslim population growth in England, as well as demand for Halal products, the supply chain and changing consumption trends, and build on previous work done to form a complete view of the Halal sector.

France - Fast food chain goes Halal

The Belgian fast-food chain Quick is experimenting with halal restaurants in France. The branches will only serve products which comply with the Islamic food requirements. Since mid-December, eight Quicks in France changed over completely to halal food: Toulouse, Marseille (2), Roubaix, Villeurbanne, Argenteuil, Garges-lès-Gonesse and Buchelay.

Sales of halal foie gras have increased ten-fold in the last two years, delighting supermarket chains across France. "It is one of our bestsellers, we were selling more than 30 a day" said the manager of a Parisian branch of Carrefour, while a spokesman for a leading meat wholesalers announced that demand for halal duck and halal capon has been "unprecedented" in 2009.

Industry Players Competing For Slice Of Europe's Halal Market

Industry players are now competing to get a significant share of the halal industry market in Europe which has a population of 51.2 million Muslims. "Everyone now wants a slice of the halal market," said Dr Cedomir Nestorovic, a professor at the ESSEC Business School Paris in France. According to him, halal is now regarded as a "big thing" in Europe and is no longer a taboo subject in the mainstream media.

It is a sign of the times, and another indication of the vibrant role that the Muslim community continue to play in the UK economy. Letter in Memory of UK MP David Taylor

The following is a letter written to Halal Focus in response to the news of the sudden death of the UK MP David Taylor. One of the acheivements of Mr Taylor was his work to help promote better standards of production and the introduction of a standard assurance scheme for the slaughter of Halal meat in the UK for the benefit of the Muslim community.
