Posted in: UK, Europe, Meat & Poultry, Research
A research project has been commissioned by the newly-formed Halal Steering Group, established by EBLEX with key industry figures to guide work in the Halal sector and act as a forum for issues related to Halal meat. It will cover the Muslim population growth in England, as well as demand for Halal products, the supply chain and changing consumption trends, and build on previous work done to form a complete view of the Halal sector.

We are competing with the superstores

A local Halal grocery store in the UK is upping its standards on hygiene, and separating the butcher side of the business from the grocery section for less risk of contamination. They still have to compete with the superstores, but this investment in making their Halal store a hygenic and well organised environment is important for the reputation of Halal in the UK. Young Muslims are looking for these clean modern Halal stores to shop in nowadays.

The question of stunning animals used for halal meat has become somewhat of buzzword amongst some UK Muslims. This is mainly due to poor communication from the relevant bodies on the differences in stunning techniques and what the shariah (and scholars of fiqh) actually say about the matter of stunning. KFC is continuing to roll out Halal-certified outlets in certain areas of the UK as part of what they call "Our Halal Trial". This is a significant move within the UK restaurant business, and this has prompted us to put up the relevant page from the KFC website. KFC is clearly making an effort to be sensitive to animal welfare issues, as well as to the sensibilities of their halal consumers by clearly stating that they are only using stunned poultry. Because there are Muslims who prefer not to eat meat from stunned animals, KFC are giving them the option to make their own decision as to whether they want to eat there. By locating the Halal outlets carefully, they are also ensuring that both Halal and non-Halal options remain within easy reach of all their customers. A carefully-considered move that we will watch with interest.

It is a sign of the times, and another indication of the vibrant role that the Muslim community continue to play in the UK economy. It is also an indication of the strengthening of the Halal consumer market in Europe in general.

The Muslim consumer needs to rise to the challenge that they can make the multinational companies look at having their products labeled as Halal. This article goes into the dark tunnel of ingredients in processed food and beverages, which may have no obvious meat source, but which necessitate the need for Halal compliance. This also shows a need for Halal auditors who are capable and qualified to work in these situations beyond the slaughter line.

This UK confectionery company has gone the extra distance to make sure their products are both vegetarian and Halal compliant for certification to capture the largest consumer group possible for their Pontefract Cakes. Once you start designing packaging that the consumers will read these issues will pop up. Decisions will need to be made about who your consumer is and what their requirements are, and Halal might well be one of them.
